How Is Zakat Calculated on Gold? 2026 Prices and Nisab Explained
July 22, 2026 · 6 min read
If you own gold — coins, bars, or jewelry sitting in a drawer — 2026 is a year to look carefully at your Zakat. Gold has been trading at historic highs, with the spot price hovering around $4,100 per ounce in July 2026. Higher prices mean the value of the gold you already own has risen sharply, and news outlets across the Muslim world have covered the effect: Gulf News reported this year on how gold volatility changes Zakat calculations, and Telangana Today reported that Zakat contributions in Hyderabad rose sharply amid the gold price hike.

The nisab: does your gold reach the threshold?
Zakat on gold is due when your holding reaches the nisab of 85 grams of pure gold (about 7.5 tolas) and you have held it for one full lunar year. At roughly $4,100 per ounce, 85 grams is worth in the region of $11,200 — check the live price on the day you calculate, because the number moves.
Two important details:
- The nisab is measured on gold content, not weight of the item. 100 grams of 18-karat jewelry contains 75 grams of pure gold (18/24 = 75%), which is below the 85-gram threshold on its own.
- If you also hold cash and savings, most scholars combine them with your gold using the silver nisab (595 grams of silver — only around $1,100 at 2026 silver prices), which means many more people owe Zakat on their combined wealth than on gold alone.
What about jewelry that is worn?
This is the classic question. The Hanafi school holds that Zakat is due on all gold and silver jewelry, worn or stored. The majority of Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali scholars exempt jewelry in regular personal use, while still requiring Zakat on pieces kept as savings or investment. Follow your school or ask a scholar you trust — but note that many families who "store wealth as gold" (a common practice in South Asia and the Gulf) are holding investment gold, on which Zakat is due by all opinions.
How to calculate it: 2.5% of value
The rate is 2.5% of the market value of your zakatable gold on your Zakat anniversary. Step by step:
- Weigh your gold and work out the pure gold content (karat / 24 × weight).
- If the total reaches 85 grams — or reaches the silver nisab when combined with cash — it is zakatable.
- Multiply the current market value by 2.5%.
For example, 100 grams of pure gold at $132 per gram is $13,200 in value, and the Zakat due is $330. Our free zakat calculator does this for you with live prices for gold, silver, and cash.
Why high prices are good news for the ummah
It can sting to owe more Zakat because gold went up — but remember what that means: your wealth grew, and the share flowing to the poor grows with it. The reports of rising Zakat contributions this year are exactly how the system is meant to work, moving wealth from those whom Allah has enriched to those in need. Calculate honestly, pay promptly, and treat the increase as a blessing to pass on.
